Inquisition of the Pure Flame

Sigil of the Inquisition

The Inquisition is the fearsome religious authority of Myrcathis — the guardians of purity, holy law, and the eternal Flame. To many citizens they are protectors; to others, a shadow from which no secret is ever safe. Their presence shapes daily life across the kingdom, and their word is considered divine judgment.

History

The Inquisition was founded during the reign of King Aleandar Myrcathis III, when the Great Purge swept across the kingdom. As fear of corruption grew, the king declared that only a dedicated order — guided by scripture, discipline, and fire — could defend humanity from impurity.
What began as a group of devoted priests soon became a powerful institution. They rooted out suspected sorcery, hunted the impure, and enforced the Doctrine with unwavering zeal. Over the generations, the Inquisition’s authority expanded until it became one of the most feared forces in Myrcathis.
Though the Purges formally ended under King Vaelor Myrcathis IV, the Inquisition’s mission remains unchanged: purity must be protected, and magic must be destroyed.

Hierarchy
The Inquisition is structured with strict discipline, reflecting the Flame's order.
  1. High Inquisitor
The supreme voice of the Doctrine in Myrcathis. He interprets scripture, delivers royal decrees, oversees all trials, and commands the entire Inquisition. His word is final.

  2. The Pyric Council
A small circle of senior zealots and scholars who advise the High Inquisitor. Each oversees a domain such as doctrine, discipline, records, or intelligence.
  3. Ordained Flames
Roaming inquisitors who act as judges, interrogators, and executioners in the field. They arrive without warning, investigate rumors of impurity, and deliver judgment on the spot.

  4. Ember Wardens
Local clergy stationed in villages and districts. They lead sermons, maintain sacred fires, observe the people, and report suspicious behavior to higher ranks.

Together, these ranks form an unbroken chain of authority — a hierarchy that answers only to the King and the Flame.

Purpose & Methods
The Inquisition’s role is simple in word but harsh in practice:
  • Seek out corruption
  • Expose impurity
  • Uphold the Doctrine
  • Purify through flame

They investigate whispers, conduct interrogations, lead public trials, and perform the burning rites that define justice in Myrcathis. Their tools are scripture, fear, discipline, and fire. Their power reaches into every street, every home, every spoken word. Inquisitors are both revered and feared — shepherds to some, executioners to others. But all citizens understand one truth: Where the Inquisition walks, the Flame itself is watching.
