History of Myrcathis

As preserved in scripture and tradition

Building the walls

Myrcathis did not begin as a fortress. In the earliest ages, the kingdom was open and unguarded, a land of bright fields, calm seas, and proud kings. But those days came to an end when whispers of corruption began to spread — strange creatures appearing in the wilds, unholy powers twisting the minds of men, and sorcery poisoning the world’s order.
It was King Alaric Myrcathis II, more then two hundred years ago, who first recognized the coming doom. Under his reign, the northern walls were built — mile upon mile of stone and iron — to seal Myrcathis off from the demons and horrors prowling the lands beyond. What began as fortification soon became salvation.
But the greatest trial came under his successor, King Aleandar Myrcathis III.
Where Alaric defended the kingdom from the outside, Aleandar confronted the corruption within. He declared that magic was not merely dangerous — it was the very root of impurity. Sorcery twisted the soul, invited darkness, and opened the door to the evils pressing against the walls of Myrcathis.

The Great Purge

Alaric’s successor, King Aleandar Myrcathis III, took the fight not only to the borders, but into the heart of Myrcathis itself.
He declared that impurity — strange bloodlines, non-human ancestry, and all forms of sorcery — had allowed corruption to seep into the world. What followed became known as the Great Purge, one of the darkest chapters in the kingdom’s history.
Across towns and villages, entire communities were hunted down. Non-humans were marked as tainted and driven into hiding, exile, or death. Many were burned alive upon the Steps of Purity as sermons rang from the towers. Others fled underground or vanished into forgotten places, seeking refuge where the Flame’s gaze could not reach.
The Purge swept across the realm for decades, leaving behind ruins where vibrant settlements once stood. Countless bloodlines were extinguished entirely.

The Reign of King Vaelor Myrcathis IV

Today, Myrcathis is ruled by King Vaelor Myrcathis IV, whose word is law and whose presence is revered as the living will of the Flame.
Though Vaelor ended the active Purges against non-humans, life for them remains harsh. They may walk the streets, but not as equals:
  • They own no land
  • They hold no rank
  • They live under constant suspicion and scrutiny
  • The inquisition watches their every move
To be non-human in Myrcathis is to survive, not to live.
And though the Purges have cooled, one law has never changed:
Those who wield magic — or those merely suspected of it — are still hunted without mercy. Sorcery is the greatest sin, the deepest corruption, and its punishment remains absolute: torture, execution, and public purification by flame.
Despite this harsh history, the people of Myrcathis believe themselves to be the last pure humans in a world swallowed by darkness. The walls stand. The Flame burns. And faith remains the kingdom’s shield against a world they dare not imagine beyond its borders.
